It's been hard over the years to learn exactly how many E28 M5s were imported into the US, let alone how many had black interiors, but the following is most likely pretty close. It comes from a February '89 M-Register Newsletter.
Stan Simm reported BMW told him this was the VIN range for North American M5s--
2791001-2791865 and 2875001-2875370
that would be 1235 units, 98 of which went to Canada, some of them with black interiors.
If there were only 12, then i've seen most of them. i'm an original owner, been hanging around bmws and m5s many years, but it's hard to believe i've seen enough to expose me to most of the black interior M5s out there. But, even if the number is more than 12, black interiors are unquestionably very rare.
